LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech University Athletics Department honored 213 student-athletes trainers, managers, and spirit squad members at the 5th annual Student-Athlete Academic Awards Banquet at the Unites Spirit Arena.
Awards are distributed in three Grade Point Average categories: 3.00 to 3.39 Merit Award; 3.4 to 3.74 High Merit Award; and 3.75 to 4.0 Highest Merit Award.
Seniors that achieved the highest cumulative gpa for each respective team are Jesus Arenas (men's basketball), Melonie Barrow (women's track), Rebecca Eimen (softball), William Figueroa (men's track), Carrie Graham (soccer), Paul McClendon (football), Jennifer Newhouse (women's golf), Royce Ramey (men's tennis), Steve Rowe (baseball), Kate Shannon (volleyball) and Candi White (women's basketball). Women's Leadership Award(s) for the outstanding accomplishments in the classroom and providing Leadership on the team: Barbara Schraml (Tennis, 4.0, Cell and Molecular Biology), Megan Schuessler (Track and Field, 4.0, Exercise and Sport Sciences) and Brittney Lanehart (Track and Field, 4.0, Exercise and Sport Sciences).
Team Community Service Award for outstanding commitment to Community Service went to Coach Felix Oskam and the Women's Soccer team.
Female Student-Athlete of the Year was awarded to Jennifer Newhouse, while Royce Ramey earned Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
