Lady Raider Softball Hands UC-Riverside 7-5 Loss

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - In the first game of the UNLV Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., the Lady Raider softball squad beat the University of California-Riverside Highlanders, 7-5, in the inaugural meeting of the squads.
After posting two wins Wednesday against New Mexico State University, the Lady Raiders got their first hit on a double to left field by Kristi Robles, who was two of four for the day. No more Lady Raider hits in the first left Robles on base and Amie Stines headed to the mound. A strikeout and two putouts left the Highlanders at zero with one man on base. Base hits by Riverside's Melissa Sanchez and Allison Solis, in the third, scored Highland's two runs of the inning and marked the first lead of the game.
With two outs against her, Tiffany Harrington slammed her second homerun of the week into center field to put the Lady Raiders on the board. Highland's Jamie Yee hit a base hit to score the team's third run. Tech did not score against until the sixth but it would be a big one, tying the game. In the top of the sixth with a full count, Andrea Joachims recorded her first home run of the season to tie the ball game, scoring Amanda Oakes who was pinch running for Sigala. Joachims was two of four with 3 RBI on the day.
Riverside broke the tie in the sixth with a walked in run and a single, putting the Lady Raiders in contention for a 5-3 loss heading into the seventh. Tech's scoring drive was kicked off with both Robles and Kelly Rhyne getting base hits. In her first appearance at the plate of the game, Arlene Newton sac bunted to push her teammates around the base. Robles scored on a Douglas at bat, who reached on an error by the shortstop.
In her second hit of the day, Joachims singled to score Rhyne. A two-run double to the fence by Lawler, who hit three of four and logged two RBI, scored Douglas and Joachims. Stines, earning her second consecutive win, pitched seven complete innings and struck out three. She and the Lady Raider defense maintained their 7-5 lead, turning it into a win and improving their record to 6-7.
Tech will take on the #5 California Bears this evening at 7:00 p.m.
