PHOENIX, ARIZ. - The Lady Raider softball team faced their toughest competition today at the Fiesta Bowl Classic squaring off with #8 Stanford.
Tech started out strong with the first four batters getting on base, starting with a single in the hole by second baseman Shayne Gipson (1-3) in the first pitch of the game. Elyssa Sigala (1-3) reached first on a fielder's choice and Kristi Robles (1-2) singled to push Sigala around. A fielder's choice by Kelly Rhyne would leave Lady Raiders on first and third but the next out would stop Tech's scoring drive.
Pitcher Amie Stines (1-3) made her second consecutive appearance for the Lady Raiders after throwing a nearly perfect game against UNLV. Stines struck out one and with the aide of Gipson and third baseman Andrea Joachims would send the Cardinals into the second with no runs.
In the second outfielder Tiffany Harrington (1-3) logged her second hit and first double of the tournament, but Tech was put out in the second with no runs. A Stanford base hit by Megan Sickler gave the Cardinals their first run of the game and a pop fly caught by Harrington lit the third out for the Cardinals.
The bats struck hot for Stanford in the third with the Cardinals scoring three runs, of which two were scored off hits in the gap. With bases loaded, the cardinals would line out to third base, leaving the score 4-0 heading into the fourth.
The sixth inning saw the best that Stanford brought to the classic. Kira Ching would knock a 2-run homerun and at the next at-bat Jessica Allister would knock another one out of the park. Stines did not step down, striking out the next two batters. Gipson would snag a grounder for the third out.
The Lady Raiders could not make it happen the bottom of the seventh, earning no hits. The squad (3-7) will head to New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M., for a doubleheader Wed.
