Tech Softball Heads To Virginia Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lady Raider softball team (12-20) will travel its farthest distance of the season this weekend, when it travels to Blacksburg, Va., for the Hokie Fast pitch Classic. The team will take on North Carolina, Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, St. Bonaventure and Virginia Tech, all being first-time opponents for the Lady Raiders.
Tech is coming off a 3-3 appearance at its home tournament, the Mutual of Omaha Red Raider Classic. Tech shut out Columbia, 6-0, and the University of New Mexico, 8-0. Tech also battled #2 Arizona to a 1-0 loss, with walk on pitcher Erin Crawford holding the Wildcats to three hits.
Leading the team into its final tournament are sophomore Kelly Rhyne who holds a .327 batting average after scoring six runs at the Red Raider Classic and senior Shayne Gipson who is batting .324 and is leading the team in stolen bases. On the mound, Crawford is leading the pitching staff with an ERA of 1.99.
Play will begin tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. with North Carolina and 7:00 p.m. with Georgia State.
