SALEM, Va. - Tech faced two first-time opponents as they took on Coastal Carolina and St. Bonaventure at the 2003 Hokie Fastpitch Classic in Salem, Va., with the team falling 6-1 to Coastal Carolina and 4-3 to St. Bonaventure.
It was a slow start for the Lady Raiders against Coastal Carolina, as they did not get on base until the fourth when Esmerelda Perez reached on an error. Perez notched a run, making it home after advancing to second and third on passed balls. An idle game would get moving in the sixth with Coastal Carolina scoring five runs off four hits. Tech logged its first hit of the game in the sixth off a double by Perez, but she was left stranded on base. Tech could not overcome a fifth inning deficit and fell 6-1.
In its second contest of the day, Tech competed against St. Bonaventure. Amanda Douglas, finishing 2-of-4, led off for the Lady Raiders in the second with a double and landing on third after an error. The Bonnies struck hard in the third scoring three runs off of four hits and gaining a 3-0 advantage.
Kristi Robles broke the potential shutout in the fifth when she slammed a ball to right center field, scoring Andrea Joachims who had singled. Arlene Newton, in her first at bat of the game as pinch hitter, came in and hit it down the center scoring Britney Stolle. The lead was cut into half and Tech continued to slice the lead with a one RBI single by Kelly Rhyne. This late game scoring drive would not be enough to contain the Bonnies and Tech fell 4-3.
The Lady Raiders (13-23) will finalize play tomorrow at 12 p.m. when they take on the Virginia Tech Hokies.
