LUBBOCK, Texas - The Big 12 Conference announced today that Stacey Poole and John Walker have each been awarded a $5,000 post-graduate scholarship and was part of a league record 24 student-athletes to receive the award.
A committee of three faculty athletics representatives, one senior woman administrator and one director of athletics form the selection group for the postgraduate scholarship awards, which helps student-athletes to continue their formal education.
Criteria for these awards include a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the scholar-athlete's respective institution, and completion of athletics' eligibility. They must graduate from their member institutions within 15 months of selection as postgraduate scholarship recipients and are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years after graduation.
Middle blocker Stacey Poole of Las Cruces, N.M., led the women's volleyball team in total blocks and block assists in the 2002 season. For the second consecutive year, Poole was selected to the Academic All-Big 12 team. She is an Exercise and Sports Science major planning to continue on in a similar field of study in graduate school.
John Walker finished the 2003 tennis season with 14 wins - the most on the Red Raider squad. The Garland, Texas, native has also been an Academic All-Big 12 honoree. A finance major, Walker plans to remain at Texas Tech to pursue an M.B.A.
Previous Texas Tech winners of the Big 12 post-graduate scholarship are Jimmy Frush, Bobbi Crill, Keith Cockrum, Jamie Vannoy, Paula Workman and Royce Ramey.
