LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Athletics Department announced today the seven 2004-05 Jeannine McHaney Scholars. One student-athlete from each of the women's sports was chosen as a McHaney Scholar based on academics, athletics and community service.
This year's scholars are Chesley Dabbs (basketball), Laura Grote (volleyball), Megan Hull (golf), Katja Kovacic (tennis), Kelly Rhyne (softball) Allison Seifert (soccer) and Bridgett Tidwell (track/cross country).
Annually, a student-athlete in each women's sport is recognized as a Jeannine McHaney scholar athlete. The award winners exemplify the standards established by McHaney in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence as well as service to the community and the university. Student-athletes are nominated by their respective coaches. The award winners are displayed on the concourse level of the United Spirit Arena.
The Jeannine McHaney Scholars is named in honor of the late Jeannine McHaney who was one of the most influential persons in the development and history of Texas Tech University and women's athletics. McHaney was the first woman inducted into the Texas Tech Athletic Hall of Honor. A native of Northeast Arkansas, McHaney came to Tech in 1966 as a physical education professor, director of women's intramurals and coach for the volleyball team (1966-75). The Texas Tech women's Athletics Department was established in 1975 with McHaney serving as director. McHaney lost a decade-long fight with cancer October 16, 1994.
