LAFAYETTE, La. - The Texas Tech softball team kicked off the Mardi Gras Classic with a bang, winning in a run-rule game 8-0 over Southeastern Louisiana in Lafayette, La., on Friday night.
The Lady Raiders (4-9) broke through in the bottom of the second, when Britney Stolle doubled with one out and was called safe at third when Heather Parker bunted to advance her to third. Stolle scored a play later when she advanced home after Heather Parker beat the throw while stealing second. After Natalie Kula went down on strikes, the next three Tech batters singled and Parker was brought around to score and give the Lady Raiders a 2-0 lead after two innings of play.
Tech Pitcher Keely Tucker (2-3) pitched all five innings to record her first shutout and her second complete game of the season.
Tech got on the board again in the fourth inning to stretch its lead to 6-0. Freshman Natalie Kula bunted for a single and scored on a double by Natalie Enderlin. Elyssa Sigala followed with a double to put runners on second and third with one out. Kelly Rhyne followed with a single that was mishandled by the right fielder allowing Enderlin and Sigala to score. Rhyne would later score in the inning on a single by Andrea Joachims to push the Tech lead to 6-0. Rhyne would finish the game 2 for 2 with an RBI.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tech would add to its lead when Kula reached on an error to start the inning and was driven in by an Enderlin single. Elyssa Sigala ended the game with double to drive in Enderlin and put the run rule into effect. Sigala and Enderlin both posted career highs with three hits. Enderlin drove in a team-high three runs in the game.
The Lady Raiders will continue play at the Mardi Gras Classic tonight when they take on the tournament host Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana Lafayette at 8:15 pm.
