LAWRENCE, Kansas - Sophomore Erin Crawford allowed only five hits and struck out eight batters but the Jayhawks got a key pinch hit in the seventh inning to lift Kansas to 2-1 win over Tech softball at Arrocha Field in Lawrence, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon.
The Jayhawks (22-16-1; 1-3 Big 12) drew first blood in the contest, scoring a run in the game's opening frame. Lead off batter Heather Stanley doubled to left field to start the inning. Crawford (9-7) would recover to retired the next batter, but Serena Settlemier doubled to drive in Stanley and put Kansas in the lead. Crawford would get all three outs in the inning by strikeout and finished the game with eight strikeouts.
The Lady Raiders (19-21; 1-2 Big 12) got on the board in the top of the third courtesy of a RBI single by Kelly Rhyne. Natalie Kula singled with two outs and Elyssa Sigala followed by drawing an intentional walk to set the table for Rhyne, who drove in her 22nd run of the year.
Texas Tech would have the lead off batter on base in five innings and could only push across one run in the third inning. For the game, the Lady Raiders left seven runners on base.
Freshmen Brandy Moulin led Tech at the plate with two hits in the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Crawford would induce the lead off batter to ground out, but it would be the only out that the Lady Raiders would record in the inning. Kansas's Jessica Moppin singled up the middle to give the Jayhawks a one-out base runner. The next batter would battle to draw the only walk issued by Crawford in the game to put runners on first and second with one out. Sandy Smith came to the plate as pinch hitter and singled sharply to center field to plate Moppin and give the Jayhawks their first win in conference play.
Texas Tech Softball and Kansas will wrap up the two game series at Arrocha Ballpark tomorrow when the teams face off at noon.
