LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Director of Athletics Gerald Myers has named former Tech athletic trainer Ken Murray to the post of Senior Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine for the athletics department. Murray spent the last nine years as the director of cardiac rehab, sports medicine, wellness and women's heart at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock.
"I am really excited to have Ken back in our program," Myers said. "It is extremely important for us to have a first-class sports medicine program. Placing someone of Ken's caliber and expertise was a priority for us. This is a step in providing our student-athletes with one of the finest intercollegiate athletics training programs in the country."
Murray is no stranger to the athletics department, having spent 18 years as an athletics trainer at Texas Tech before moving over to Covenant. Murray first came to Texas Tech in 1978 as assistant athletics director and head athletics trainer. In his new role, Murray will oversee all sports, supervise the training staff and work closely with team physicians in providing quality care and medical services for Tech's student-athletes.
"I'm excited to come back and be a part of this great program," Murray said. "I appreciate the opportunity Gerald has presented me and looking forward to working with the student-athletes, coaches, athletics trainers and doctors to ensure the top quality in health care for our sport programs.
"It's with mixed emotions that I leave Covenant, as I have had a great nine years there during a transitional period that Covenant has gone through after the merger of two great, old hospitals in West Texas," Murray added. "But having been presented with the opportunity to get back into athletics near the end of my career is just an opportunity I feel I am supposed to be doing at this stage in my life."
