Red Raider Softball Heads to California

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Red Raider softball team is headed off to California to battle Auburn, No. 5/6 Stanford, Alabama-Birmingham, Sacramento St. and UC Davis at the Stanford Tournament.
The Red Raiders had this past weekend off as the previous weekend, Tech competed in the Louisville Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada. After getting rained out on day one, the Red Raiders played two games on the second day falling to Portland St. 7-2 and Utah 8-2. On day three, Tech came out ready to play and edged Louisville 5-4. Tech was led during the weekend at the plate by senior Kelly Rhyne who posted a batting average of .667 over the weekend going 6 of 9. Tech was led defensively by freshman Jennifer Corkin who had 18 putouts and senior Lisa Lawler who had 16 putouts.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Day One, Fri., Feb. 25
Texas Tech vs. Auburn, 3 p.m.
Auburn is 14-4 on the season and is led by sophomore Holly Curries who is batting .417 for the season. The Tigers have counted on three underclassmen pitchers who together average a 1.27 ERA. Curries also leads the pitching staff as she posted an ERA of 1.19 in 53 innings of work. She has a record of 6-3 with 68 strikeouts and 18 walks.
Texas Tech vs. No. 5/6 Stanford, 7 p.m.
No. 5/6 Stanford is 6-1 on the season and is led by junior Lauren Lappin who has a batting average of .619. She is 13 of 21 for the season with two doubles, two homeruns and seven RBI. Another key player for the Cardinals is junior Catalina Morris who is batting .429 in 21 at bats and has nine hits including five homeruns. The Cardinals pitching staff is led by junior Laura Severson who has a record of 4-1 with a 1.04 ERA. She has compiled 27 innings pitched, 20 strikeouts and 10 walks.
Day Two, Sat., Feb. 26
Texas Tech vs. UAB, 5 p.m.
Alabama-Birmingham is 7-6 on the season and is led by sophomore Holly Krzan who has a batting average of .280. She is 7 of 25 on the season with a double and homerun. The pitching staff is lead by senior Erica Mascarenas who is 4-0 on the season with a 1.80 ERA. In 25 innings of work, she has 22 strike outs and 11 walks.
Texas Tech vs. Sacramento St., 7 p.m.
Sacramento St. is 5-3 on the season and is led by junior outfielder Lindy Winkler who posted a batting average of .400 and is 10 of 25. The pitching staff is led by senior Brianna Ferguson who has an ERA of 0.52 and is 3-1 on the season. She has had 27 innings of work with 26 strikeouts and seven walks.
Day Three, Sun., Feb. 27
Texas Tech vs. UC Davis, 11 a.m. UC Davis is 2-10 on the season and is led by freshman Jessica Hancock who has a batting average of .281 and is 9 for 32 including four doubles. The pitching staff is also headed by Hancock as she has an ERA of 1.29 in 21.2 innings of work. She has a record of 1-3 for the season with 28 strikeouts and eight walks. Another key pitcher is junior Rachel Kelly who has an ERA of 2.70 with 33.2 innings pitched, 21 strikeouts and six walks. Her record is also 1-3 on the season.
