LUBBOCK, Texas - Less than a month from now, 21 of the top women's golf teams in the country will converge on Lubbock for the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships Central Regional at The Rawls Course. Texas Tech will host the event May 5-7.
"Texas Tech is looking forward to hosting the Central Regional this year, and we are excited to showcase one of the top golf courses in the country," Tech Director of Athletics Gerald Myers said. "The Rawls Course will provide a challenging, but exciting venue for this year's regional."
Tech was selected as a regional site for this year's championships back in October 2003, one month after The Rawls Course officially opened. During the course's nearly two years in operation, it has received several recognitions, including a No. 2 distinction by Golf Digest of New Affordable Public Courses in America; a No. 3 ranking on Golf Week's Top University Courses in America list; and a No. 23 ranking on Golf Magazine's Best 50 Golf Courses for $50 or Less.
"This is really an exciting time and tremendous opportunity for the women's golf team and The Rawls Course," Lady Raider Golf Coach Stacey Totman said. "This is the reason this course was built. It serves as a great ambassador for the university and is one the Texas Tech, Lubbock and West Texas communities can be proud of. We are excited about the possibility to compete in the NCAA Championships on our home course."
Following the regional, Oregon State University will host the NCAA Championships at Sunriver Golf Resort in Sunriver, Ore., May 17-20, 2005.
The 2005 NCAA Central Regional officially begins with a practice round May 4, followed by the 54-hole event the following three days. The event is open to the public and admission is free.
