LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Athletics and the Red Cross have joined teams to assist with the Hurricane Katrina disaster relief effort. Raider Aid will begin this weekend at the Texas Tech soccer matches against Northwestern and Minnesota.
Raider Aid volunteers will be collecting donations, such as food, clothing, toiletry items and monetary donations, at this weekend's games - 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Sunday - at R.P. Fuller Track and Soccer Complex. The groups also will have volunteers outside all four corners of Jones SBC Stadium for the Red Raiders' opener against Florida International on Sat., Sept. 10. Kickoff is 6 p.m.
"We are looking for the manpower, people who can help assist in placing people into shelters and to help clothe and feed them," said Jimmy Castillo, director of development with the Lubbock Red Cross. "They can certainly do that by calling the local chapter number at 765-8534."
Volunteer forms will be available at each event for those wishing to aide in the effort. Fans seeking more information on the relief effort are encouraged to visit www.texastech.com and www.RedCross.org. The organization's phone number is (800-HELP-NOW).
