Red Raider Golf Posts Strong Opening Round

PONTE VERDRA BEACH, Fla. - Led by the strong opening round performances of senior Andrew Dresser and junior Oscar Floren, the Texas Tech men's golf team turned in a team score of 301 at the first round of the Mercedes Benz Collegiate at the Sawgrass Country Club to end the round in third place as a team.
The Red Raiders trail overall leader ULCA by only 11 strokes entering Monday's second round.
Dresser used four first-round birdies to turn in a one-under par round of 72, while Floren fired five birdies to complete the round with the same stroke total.
Freshman Garrett Merrell was the next highest Tech finisher on the day, completing play with a first round 78 to end in a tie for 32nd place. Fellow freshmen Jake Younan-Wise and Brandon Lakatta turned in rounds of 81 and 85, respectively, to round out the Tech contingency at the event.
The Red Raiders are back in action at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate on Monday with the tournament's second round, before completing play on Tuesday.
