JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore second baseman Jennifer Bowers slammed her second home run in as many games to help led the Texas Tech softball to a doubleheader sweep of Jacksonville by virtue a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Red Raiders improve their record to 2-0 on the season for the first time since the 2001 season.
The Tech offense got going early, as in the top of the second inning freshman Brooke Neuman reached base with a sharp single to center field leading off the frame to give her the first hit of her young career. Bowers, who connected on a three-run home run in the first game of the twinbill, followed Neuman and put the Red Raiders on the board as she slammed her second long ball of the day over the wall in center field.
The Dolphins were able to cut the Red Raider's lead in half in home half of the second, as catcher Janine Palumbo connected on solo home run to left field of Tech starter Erin Crawford.
Crawford picked up the win in the contest, limiting the Dolphins to only one run on one hit in four innings of work.
Neuman continued her strong day at the plate in the top of the third inning by singling with runners on second and third to drive in both runners and put Tech up 4-1. The Gilbert, Ariz., native finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate in the first start of her career.
After JU was able to tally a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Red Raiders were able to tally their fifth run of the ballgame when Whitney Riley picked up her first hit of the season, a RBI double down the left field line.
Senior pitcher Julie Hauck, who earned the win the first game, entered the game in relief and worked a perfect seventh inning to pick up the fifth save of her career.
Texas Tech softball is back in action on Friday as it travels to St. Augustine, Fla., to take part in the Triple Crown Classic. The Red Raiders will take on Southern Illinois at 9 a.m. and return to battle Central Florida at 1:30 p.m.
