ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. - Trailing 2-0 early, the Texas Tech softball team rebounded to score four unanswered runs and hold the Lobos scoreless for the final five innings of a 4-2 victory over New Mexico in the final game of the 2006 Lobo Classic at Lobo Field in Albuquerque, N.M.
With the win, Texas Tech snapped a 13-game winning streak by the Lobos and improved its overall mark this season to 11-19.New Mexico, meanwhile, falls to 15-13 this season.
The Red Raiders threaten in each of the first two innings, getting lead off hits from Ashley Parker and Jennifer Corkin, but the team could not convert the scoring chances into runs on the scoreboard. It was the Lobos who took the game's first run as second baseman Kristina Schmallen drove a pitch from Tech starter Erin Crawford over the wall in centerfield with a runner on base to give New Mexico a 2-0 lead.
Parker finished the game as Tech's leading hitter, posting a season high three hits in a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, while Corkin was also impressive with the bat, collecting her fourth and fifth doubles of the season.
In the top of the third inning, the Red Raiders responded, scoring their first run of the contest on a RBI single from right fielder Whitney Riley, who extended her team-best hitting streak to nine games,
After holding UNM off the scoreboard in the home half of the third, Tech continued its offensive charge in the top of the fourth. With two outs in the frame and runners on base, the Lobos were on the verge of escaping the frame still leading 2-1, but Ashley Parker slapped a ball into right field, which was misplayed by UNM right fielder Ryanne Hodgins allowing both runners to score and the Red Raiders to capture the lead at 3-2.
Texas Tech added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI single by third baseman Natalie Kula, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the fourth.
Senior pitcher Julie Hauck (5-6) pitched the final four innings of the game, holding the Lobos to no runs on only three hits to pick up her fifth win of the season.
Red Raider softball is back in action next weekend as the team jumps into Big 12 action with a trip to Waco, Texas, to square off against the Baylor Bears.
