Boca Raton, Fla. - Rebounding from an 8-7 loss to tournament host, Florida Atlantic the night before, Texas Tech used 11 hits and got solid pitching to take a, 7-0 win over Illinois and capture the championship of the Florida Atlantic tournament. With the win Texas Tech improves to 11-5 on the season, while the Illini drop to 8-7.
Much like the night before, the Red Raiders moved out to a 7-0 lead, this time entering the sixth. But, unlike the previous night, Texas Tech would not be overtaken as freshman pitcher Ashly Jacobs improved to 8-3 on the season as the went the distance, picking up the shut out (her third) and scattering four hits, while striking out five.
Most of the run support came from the top of the lineup, highlighted by right fielder Whitney Riley's 3-for-4 performance with a double and triple, two RBIs and two runs scored, and Ashley Parker's 3-for-4 day with three runs scored. Leah Legler added two hits and Jennifer Corkin chipped in with a hit and two RBIs.
A. Parker dropped an infield single to open the game and was sacrificed to second by designated player Legler. Riley doubled to right center, scoring A. Parker and the Red Raiders posted a run in the first.
Adding to the lead in the third, A. Parker reached on an error with one out and moved to second on a single by Legler. Both moved up on a throwing error by the Illini shortstop. Riley collected her second RBI of the day when she singled to left, plating A. Parker. First baseman Corkin followed with a single through the right side, which scored both Legler and Riley and made the score, 4-0, Red Raiders in the top of the third.
Riley opened the fifth with a triple, her second of the season. She scored when an illegal pitch was called on Illini pitcher, Vicky Brown, as the Red Raiders pushed their lead to 5-0.
Pinch hitter Montana Patin opened the sixth with a one-out single to center and advanced to second when A. Parker collected her third hit of the day. Legler knocked in A. Parker with a single to left, which was misplayed by the right fielder, allowing Patin to score and extending the cushion to the eerily familiar, 7-0.
Texas Tech travels next to Fullerton, Calif. to compete in the CSF Worth Tournament which begins Friday, March 2, when the Red Raiders face Nevada and No. 8 Northwestern.
