TEMPE, Ariz. - Katie Burkhart improved to 10-1 on the season and Arizona State moved to 24-2 as the Sun Devils hand Texas Tech a 10-1 loss in the second game of the day for the Red Raiders, who fall to 13-10 on the season.
Quite frankly, it was a rough day for the Red Raiders as the team faced two of the nation's top-10 teams and two of the nation's finest aces in Burkhart and Danielle Lawrie, who picked up a win earlier for No. 10 Washington against Tech. In the nightcap, Burkhart gave up a run (it was unearned) on four hits, walked no one, and the junior left-hander struck out 16. Arizona State is ranked either No. 3 or No. 6, depending on the poll, and Washington is currently ranked 10 or 11.
Junior left fielder Devin Zaragoza managed two hits and scored a run in the losing effort. Sophomore right fielder Montana Patin and freshman short stop Amanda Myers collected the other hits for the Red Raiders.
Sarah Losleben took the loss for Texas Tech as the junior gave up seven runs on eight hits and she issued two walks in four innings of work. Her record is now 3-4 on the year. Sophomore Alex Watkins pitched the final three innings giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks.
On Saturday, the Red Raiders will face the same two teams again in an afternoon double header as the Big 12/Pac-10 Challenge continues, beginning at 3:30 (CT). The Gametracker feature will again be available via the link on the Schedules page.
In other action at the event, Missouri staged a dramatic come-from-behind win over the Huskies as the Tigers answered Washington's 3-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh with three runs and then managed to post same scores in each of the eighth and ninth innings and then won on a grand slam, 10-8. Following that, Arizona State used a dramatic seventh inning long ball of its own to beat Missouri, 4-2.
