SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Jennifer Corkin knocked in three and hit a home run and Brandy Moulin was three for four with two runs scored to pace Texas Tech to a 6-3 win over UT-San Antonio in the second game of the doubleheader and completed a sweep of the Red Raiders. With the win, Tech improves to 17-13 and now will head into the conference portion of its season.
Texas Tech put up two runs in the top of the second as Jennifer Corkin singled to start the inning. Liz Eimen came on to run and moved to second on a single by third baseman Brandy Moulin. Eimen scored and Moulin moved to third on a single to right center by second baseman Jennifer Bowers. Moulin scored when Whitney Riley reached on a fielder's choice which was good enough to plate Moulin, but forced Bowers at second. Janielle Nickels (5-5) struck out catcher Robyn Wike and short stop Heather Parker to end the threat.
The Red Raiders tacked another run on in the third when Ashley Parker singled, stole second, moved to third on a single by Montana Patin and scored on ground ball by Corkin.
The Roadrunners evened the score at three in the bottom of the fourth on a lead-off double by Jessica Rogers, a walk by Krista Sitka and a three-run bomb by Leanne Risberg, which sailed over the scoreboard in left-center field.
Tech went back on top in the top of the fifth on a single by A. Parker. Devin Zaragoza forced her at second and then scored herself when Corkin blasted a Nickels' offering to a tree beyond the fence in right field for her fifth home run of the season. Consecutive singles by Moulin, Bowers and Riley yielded another run (Riley's RBI) and the Red Raiders led, 6-3, moving into the bottom of the fifth.
Sarah Losleben improved to 4-5 and struck out seven and pitched herself out of a few jams with her good breaking ball and changeup, including in the sixth, when she induced a ground-ball double play with runners at first and second and then struck out Krista Sitka and in the seventh when the game ended on a double play ball, third to second to first. Moulin,. who has played third base for the Red Raiders of late, started both double plays.
Big 12 play begins on Thursday, March 22, when the Red Raiders host No. 6 Oklahoma for two games in Lubbock. It will be the Red Raiders home opener.
