Red Raiders Finish 4-Over-Par in the Second Round

AUSTIN, Texas - After a rain-hampered first day, Texas Tech was able to finish the second round of the Morris Williams Intercollegiate with a five-shot improvement. The Red Raiders sat in a tie for 10th after 18 holes, but moved to a three-way tie for ninth after the second and final day of competition. Tech finished the tournament with rounds of 297-292--589 to end the event 13-over-par.
Santiago Rivas led the Red Raider squad after improving in the second round and firing even-par on Tuesday. The sophomore from Columbia finished with rounds of 74-72--146 to tie for 23rd. Oscar Floren, who sat in a tie for seventh after one round, lost his step when he finished with a 5-over in the final round. The senior Red Raider turned in scores of 71-77--148 to tie for 38th.
Teammates Matt Smith and Garrett Merrell each ended the Morris Williams with rounds of 76-73--149, 5-over-par, to tie for 42nd. Will Griffin tied for 52nd with a 6-over 150 after shooting 76-74. Competing as an individual was Jeremy Martin who tied for 63rd with scores of 76-76--152.
No. 10 UNLV took the lead and team title with a field-low round of 280 on Tuesday. The Rebels had an 8-under 568 to finish six shots ahead of No. 27 Tulsa and No. 12 Texas A&M. The top-ranked team in the 14 team field, No. 3 Oklahoma State, finished in eighth, one shot ahead of Tech.
There was a three-way tie for the individual title, as each finished with a 5-under 139. Tulsa's Ryan Henry, New Mexico's Steve Saunders and Texas A&M's Austin Schauer (competing as an individual) all finished the event atop the player leaderboard.
