LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech athletics finished the 2006-07 sports season on a high note with a top 50 showing in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup Standings, announced this week by the organization. Tech finished 47th, matching its highest showing (1995-96) in the 14-year history of the Cup.
"This year's finish is the highest for our program in 11 years and is a credit to the hard work and effort of our student-athletes, coaches and support staff," Texas Tech Director of Athletics Gerald Myers said. "I am proud of the accomplishments of our teams and of the progress our program showed this year. This is a solid stepping stone to the future of Texas Tech athletics."
Texas Tech distance runner Sally Kipyego highlighted the point totals for Texas Tech during the season, winning individual national championships in four events in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. Her accomplishments as well as those of each of Texas Tech's programs that saw NCAA postseason play led to Tech's final standing this year.
This year's standing is 30 spots higher than Tech's average placing of 77 and at least 53 positions better than last year. Texas Tech, which competes in 17 NCAA intercollegiate sports, was not among the top 100 schools listed last season.
Texas led the Big 12 in eighth place, followed by Texas A&M (18), Oklahoma (25), Nebraska (27), Colorado (37), Baylor (38), Oklahoma State (41), Texas Tech (47), Missouri (53), Kansas (66), Iowa State (73) and Kansas State (111).
The U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The U.S. Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Ala., is the program's sponsor. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 women's and 10 men's.
