Red Raiders Open Spring Campaign in Puerto Rico

LUBBOCK, Texas - Coming off one of its most successful fall seasons in team history, the Texas Tech women's golf team kicks off its spring campaign at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic today, Feb. 24, to Feb. 26 at the 6,000-yard par 72 Coco Beach Resort in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
Tech will be one of 18 teams competing in a field chalked full of talented teams. Fourteen teams, including the No. 50-ranked Red Raiders, ranked in the top 50 in the country will be vying for the team title. Included in the field is six schools ranked in the Top 25 and three Big 12 schools. Included in this group is host and No. 11-ranked Purdue, No. 6 Arkansas, No. 10 Georgia, No. 12 Tennessee, No. 16 Alabama and No. 17 Kent State.
Others teams ranked in the top 50 include No. 27 LSU, No. 28 South Carolina, No. 30 TCU, No. 34 Oklahoma, No. 40 Iowa State, No. 41 Florida State, No. 42 N.C. State and Tech. Also competing will be Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Central Florida. The event will also feature nine players currently ranked among the nation's top 50 women's collegiate golfers.
The Red Raiders just finished a very good fall campaign in which they finished with three top five finishes, including picking up the team title at the McHaney/Morehead Invitational held at the Rawls Course in October. They also finished second at the USF/Richmond Country Club Invitational in San Francisco, Calif.
Coach Stacey Totman will bring a young, talented squad to Puerto Rico. Leading the way will be junior Megan Dowdy, who carries a team-leading 75.83 stroke average. Not far behind are Rosalyn Kim, 76.13 stroke average, Ulrika Van Niekerk and Gloriana Soto.
Action for the three-day 54-hole competition will tee off today with the first 18 holes and conclude on Tuesday.
