Texas Tech Leads with Arizona State in Hawaii

LUBBOCK, Texas - Three Red Raiders completed the opening round among the top 15 on the leaderboard and guided No. 16 Texas Tech to a tie atop the team standings with Arizona State at the Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate on Wednesday. The three-day event resumes with second-round play Thursday.
Junior Santiago Rivas and mid-year transfer Chris Ward fired rounds of 4-under 66 on the par-70 Waikoloa Village Golf Course and are two shots back of leader Stephan Gross of Arizona State. The pair also is tied with the nation's sixth-ranked golfer, Jamie Lovemark of USC. Ward is competing in his first event as a Red Raider after transferring from Oklahoma State in January. Sophomore Will Griffin, the nation's 30th-ranked golfer, shot a 68 to give the Red Raiders a strong presence on the leaderboard entering the second round.
Junior Garrett Merrell and freshman Sergio Franky fired rounds of 71 and 73 and are in ties for 36th and 65th place, respectively.
Both Texas Tech and Arizona State shot 271 on the day, two strokes better than third-place Oregon State. No. 8 USC (274) stands in fourth, while No. 4 Georgia Tech (275) and No. 10 Stanford (275) are tied in fifth place. Oklahoma (277), Oregon (279), Washington (280) and host Hawaii-Hilo (282) round out the top 10. CSU-Bakersfield (283), Colorado (284), TCU (284), Kansas (285), UC-Davis (288), Santa Clara (288), Pacific (291) and Hawaii (292) complete the field.
