FULLERTON, Calif. - Texas Tech softball battled the No. 8 team in the land strong before Stanford pulled away for the 9-2 win Saturday at the Fullerton Worth Tournament.
The Red Raiders are now 2-2 in the tournament, with both losses coming at the hands of teams that are ranked and receiving votes. Legler went 3-4 to lead the way, while Elizabeth Eimen was 1-3 with an RBI double. Tye Coats (1-6) took the loss on the rubber. Devin Zaragoza saw her hitting streak snapped at eight games.
Tech came out strong early on as Legler singled and then stole second to start the game. She came in to score a short time later on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jennifer Corkin. That was all the Red Raiders would get, however, as Stanford's Ashley Chinn settled in to get the next two outs and end the inning.
The Cardinal surged back in a big way in the bottom of the first, plating three runs. The second inning went quietly for both squads before Stanford added another run in the third on a homerun to left field.
Tech cut the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the fourth when Robyn Wike walked and came in on a double from Elizabeth Eimen. Legler singled to give the Red Raiders two runners on with two outs, but Stanford held on to get the final out. The Cardinal added another run in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead.
Tech looked poised to make another run as it had two Stanford outs, until the Cardinal sneaked in a pair of quick runs. The Red Raiders would not be able to get anything more as Stanford's defense tightened up. The Cardinal finally ended with a pair of runs in the sixth.
Tech will conclude the Fullerton Worth Tournament tomorrow when it battles the UC Davis Mustangs. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT. Fans can follow the action at www.texastech.com.
