FULLERTON, Calif. - Texas Tech softball leaves Southern California a winner as the Red Raiders used a fourth-inning boost to upend UC Davis 3-2 in their final game of the Fullerton Worth Tournament Sunday afternoon.
Tech finished the three-day event with a 3-2 record, with its only losses coming to No. 8 Stanford and previously-ranked Cal State Fullerton. The Red Raiders played each of those teams tough before coming up short.
Jennifer Corkin went 2-3 with an RBI to pace Tech. Elizabeth Eimen came up huge for the second day in a row, knocking in a big two-run single in the fourth. She finished 1-2 on the day. Tye Coats (2-6) picked up the win in relief and struck out six in three innings of work. Sarah Losleben picked up the save, her first of the year, by striking out the last two hitters of the game.
Corkin brought in the first run of the game for the Red Raiders in the bottom of the first when she drove in Devin Zaragoza from second with a single down the right field line. The Red Raiders would not get anything more that inning. Ashly Jacobs held the Aggies to just one hit through the first three innings until the UC Davis clean-up hitter homered to center field in the top of the fourth to even the score going into the bottom of the inning. After one out, Corkin singled to start the rally and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jennifer Krause came into run for Corkin and advanced to third on a single from Whitney Riley. Riley stole second to give Tech runners on second and third. Eimen lined a single to center to bring in both runs and give the Red Raiders the runs they would need.
UC Davis put a scare into things in the top of the seventh when it loaded the bases with one out. The Aggies put one across when the umpire called an illegal pitch on Losleben right after she entered the game. The senior settled right in and struck out the last two Aggie hitters to secure the win.
Tech will return to action this week when it hosts the New Mexico Lobos in a double-header home opener Wednesday. It will then head to Palo Alto, Calif. for the Stanford Tournament Fri., March 7-9.
