LUBBOCK, Texas - Stacey Totman's Lady Raider golf team has found a rhythm out west as the squad posted its third straight top-three finish at the Mountainview Collegiate on Sunday in Tucson, Ariz. Junior Megan Dowdy turned in her best performance of the spring in an 11th-place tie to lead the Lady Raiders.
The finish is another in a string of impressive showings for Texas Tech, since closing the Puerto Rico tournament in 14th place in late February. The Lady Raiders were runners-up at the Rio Verde Invitational in early March in Phoenix and followed three days later tied for third at the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational in Las Vegas.
Dowdy was steady throughout the event as she carded rounds of 73-74-74 for a 5-over 221. Freshman Stephanie Smith continued her stellar run with a 15th-place tie after shooting a 7-over 223, including a final-round 72. Rosalyn Kim, who was in contention entering the final round, followed a pair of 72s with an 82 in the final round to finish in a tie for 31st place with a 10-over 226. Ulrika Van Niekerk posted a final-round 72, but carded rounds of 80 and 79 to open the event, and finished in a 56th-place tie. Robyn Scott also tied in 56th place. Playing unattached from the team, Gloriana Soto turned in the best tournament for the Lady Raiders, tying in fourth place with a 3-over 219.
The Lady Raiders were in fourth place entering the day and were boosted into the third-place tie by carding the third-lowest round of the day with a 297. Tournament champion Indiana and runner-up San Jose State turned in rounds of 291 and 294, respectively.
Of the 17 teams in the field, nine were from the Big 12 Conference, almost giving the event the feel of a conference championship warm-up. The Lady Raiders shared the third slot with Oklahoma, but outlasted the other seven teams. The Big 12 Conference Championships are scheduled for April 25-27 in Stillwater, Okla.
The Hoosiers led the field with an 880, while San Jose State followed nine shots back with an 889. Texas Tech and Oklahoma carded a pair of 891s, while Missouri (892), Nebraska (895), Louisville (895), East Carolina (901), Iowa State (903) and Michigan (907) rounded out the top ten.
Kansas (909), tournament-host Colorado (910), Kansas State (912), Northwestern (915), Colorado State (922), Baylor (930) and Boise State (939) closed out the field of 17.
Texas Tech will do a quick two-step north and compete in the BYU/Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah, Tuesday and Wednesday for the final regular-season event prior to the conference championships.
