LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech struggled Saturday with the third-highest round of the top 10 teams on the leaderboard after turning in a 306, 15 shots off of Friday's top round of 291. The Lady Raiders drop to third from first and are 13 shots back of leader Notre Dame at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational in Rio Verde, Ariz.
Texas Tech's Ulrika van Niekirk, the tournament leader following round one, followed Friday's 68 with a 4-over 76 Saturday to drop into a third-place tie. Stephanie Smith carded her second 74 and remained in a 13th-place tie with one other player. Alex Gibson is tied in 36th place after shooting an 80, while Megan Dowdy improved five strokes with a 76 and is tied in 52nd place. Rosalyn Kim and Robyn Scott are tied in 61st and 74th places, respectively. Each shot 84s on the day.
van Niekirk is one of three players tied in third place and is two shots behind tournament leader So-Hyun Park of Notre Dame. Arkansas-Little Rock's Mallory Fraiche is in second at 1-under.
Notre Dame (584) leads the event by seven strokes over second-place Minnesota (591). Texas Tech (597) follows in third, while Arkansas-Little Rock (602) and Northern Arizona (605) are fourth and fifth. Western Michigan (606), Missouri State (610), Illinois State (610), Ball State (611) and Eastern Michigan (612) comprise the remainder of the top ten.
Wisconsin (613), Toledo (616), Bradley (617), Cincinnati (621), Bowling Green State (626), Southern Illinois (631), Xavier (632) and Ohio (657) round out the field of 18.
The final round gets underway Sunday morning.
