PALO ALTO, Calif. - One inning proved to be the difference as North Dakota State snatched a 3-0 victory away from Texas Tech by breaking a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning late Friday night.
Devin Zaragoza went 2-3 to lead the way for Tech, while Whitney Riley and Megan Shupp both finished 1-3. Ashly Jacobs (0-6) had a solid complete-game effort despite being saddled with the loss in the circle.
Through five and one half innings, Jacobs and the Bison's Allison Bakke battled tooth and nail with neither one allowing the opposing squad to mount much of a threat. Both teams put runners in scoring position and looked to break out, but these threats were squashed rather quickly.
In the bottom of the sixth, NDSU finally broke through with a single to left to plate a runner from second. Two batters later, the Bison's Kelly Cantrell took an offering over the left field wall just out of the reach of Zaragoza for a two-run homer to give NDSU the 3-0 lead.
Riley singled in Tech's half of the seventh and advanced to second, but Bakke got the final two Red Raiders to slam the door.
The Red Raiders will look to rebound tomorrow when it takes on No. 7 Stanford at 6 p.m. before taking on the College of Charleston right after that at 8 p.m. Fans can follow the action via www.texastech.com.
