AUSTIN, Texas - The first in-state battle of the week did not end the way Texas Tech softball hoped as Texas (23-16-2, 7-5) upended the Red Raiders, 10-1, Thursday night at McCombs Field.
With the win, the Longhorns take the season series 2-1 and return the favor from Tech's (15-32, 3-9) 5-4 win in Lubbock earlier in the season. The game marked the first time since 2000 that the two schools had met three times in a season and featured two of the Big 12's best pitcher's, UT's Meagan Denny and the Red Raiders' Ashly Jacobs, going head to head.
The start of the contest did not mirror the offensive output that would follow. Jacobs and Denny quickly put their opposition down in the first without even a whimper. Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, the Longhorns quickly responded and put a pair of runs on the board in the second on a two-run double from Kacie Cook.
Tech would be unable to get the offense it needed through the next couple innings as Denny kept the Red Raiders hitless and her teammates responded with a pair of four-run innings to give the Longhorns a comfortable lead.
Jennifer Bowers upset Denny's no-hit bid with a single to left in the top of the fifth and Jenny Krause, who came in to pinch run for Jennifer Corkin, who had reached on an error, came across a short time later on a fielder's choice from Jennifer Lee. That would be all the scoring UT would allow as Denny put down the last two Tech hitters to seal the win.
Bowers and Robyn Wike each went 1-2 to pace the Red Raiders, while Lee picked up her second-career RBI. Jacobs (7-13) took the loss in the circle.
The Red Raiders will look to bounce right back Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Waco to take on the Baylor Bears. First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT, while Sunday's action is set to get under way at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available via www.texastech.com.
