LUBBOCK, Texas - After dropping a close 5-3 extra-inning decision to UT-Arlington in game one, Texas Tech came back strong in the second game to win 8-1, thanks in part to a two-run home run by Robyn Wike and four RBI from Jennifer Corkin.
UTA (21-20) was first to strike in game one with a solo home run from Amanda Swofford to make the score 1-0. Robyn Wike scored to make the game 1-1 when Montana Patin drew a bases-loaded walk. UTA retook the advantage in the third with a home run by Katie Jones, but Techs' (18-33) Jennifer Bowers matched it in the bottom of the sixth with her fifth home run of the season to tie the score at two runs apiece.
The game remained deadlocked at 2-2 and went into extra innings. The Maverick's Samantha Chumchal took advantage of a pitch that missed to hit a three-run homer and put the score at 5-2. Despite a double from Elizabeth Eimen in the bottom of the ninth to score Wike, Tech was unable to pull ahead and dropped game one 5-3.
The hard hitting Red Raiders resurfaced in game two as it notched two runs in the bottom of the first on a single from Jennifer Corkin to score Devin Zaragoza and Patin. UTA failed to get anything on the board in the second as Tye Coats forced them to leave two batters on base. The score was upped to 4-0 in the second on a Leah Legler double that scored Wike and a single from Corkin that brought home Legler.
The Mavs managed to get its only run of the game in the fifth off a double from Rebecca Collum to make the score 4-1. Tech's bats responded as Coats doubled to center to score Bowers. With one on, Wike smashed her third home run of the season to continue her career-best seven-game hit streak and up the score to 7-1. With the bases loaded, Corkin was walked to score Legler from third and make the final score 8-1.
Corkin's four RBIs helped pace Tech, while Wike went 4-7 on the day with three RBIs and four runs scored. Legler went 2-6 with an RBI and two runs scored.
