LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore pitcher Ashly Jacobs was named the Big 12 Softball Pitcher of the Week today after helping Texas Tech to a weekend sweep of Nebraska, its first-ever season sweep of the Huskers. It is Jacobs' first career weekly award.
Jacobs, a Houston, Texas, (Cypress Creek HS) product, is the first Tech player since 2004 to receive a weekly softball award from the conference. She is also the first pitcher to receive this honor since Amanda Renfro was honored twice in 2001.
For the week, Jacobs pitched 11 and two-thirds shutout innings while giving up just one walk and striking out six. In Saturday's game against the Huskers, she threw a complete-game shutout while allowing just three base runners on three hits to help the Red Raiders to a 7-0 win and their first victory over Nebraska in seven years. Sunday, Jacobs came on in relief and threw four and two-thirds shutout innings, including all three extra innings, while striking out three to help Tech take the 2-1 win and complete the sweep.
The Red Raiders will be in action later today as they host Texas State in a 3 p.m. double header. From there, Tech will travel to Norman, Okla. to battle No. 11-ranked Oklahoma in a Thursday double header before heading to Columbia, Mo. for a weekend series with Missouri.
