LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Texas Tech student-athletes Dimitrio Martinez and Sarah Losleben were recently among 24 Big 12 student-athletes selected to receive 2007-08 Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships, the conference office announced.
Two athletes from each institution were selected to receive these scholarships. The scholarships are named in honor of the late Dr. Prentice Gautt, a former Big 12 Conference staff member and student services' pioneer who passed away in March 2005. Since the inception of the league in 1996-97, the list of all-time recipients has increased to 201.
To be eligible for the awards, student-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.500 on a 4.000 scale, participated in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at their respective institution and completed their athletic eligibility. The student-athletes also must graduate from their respective member institutions within 15 months of their selection for a postgraduate scholarship and are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years of graduation. Three faculty representatives, one senior woman administrator and one director of athletics form the selection panel for the awards.
Martinez is a former Tech men's tennis player that graduated in 2006. He was named the 2007 Tech male student athlete of the year and was a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree. He finished his career ranked third on Tech's career singles victories list 67 while posting a .650 winning percentage in singles play. Losleben, a recent pitcher for the Tech softball team, was a three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection that finished her career ranked among the leaders on several of the school's all-time lists, including wins, ERA, saves, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts. She recently helped the Red Raiders to their highest conference finish since 2001.
