LUBBOCK, Texas - Rory Fanning is walking across the United States to raise $3.6 million for the Pat Tillman Foundation, which was created by Tillman's family and friends, following his death in April 2004. Fanning will be in Lubbock to speak in honor of the former Arizona Cardinal on Thursday at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion at 6 p.m.
The foundation's website states, "The Pat Tillman Foundation proudly supports Rory Fanning in his quest to walk across the country in honor of Pat. By taking action and embarking on this tremendous journey, Rory exemplifies the type of leadership upon which the Foundation is based and truly reflects how Pat Tillman lived his life."
The Foundation supports the Leadership Through Action program in Arizona, where Tillman excelled as a student-athlete at Arizona State University and as a fan favorite with the NFL's Arizona Cardinals. The program provides an educational class to inspire and support students - Tillman Scholars -- as they develop leadership skills and tackle real-world problems.
Fanning met Tillman while training with the 2/75 Ranger Battalion. He served two tours in Afghanistan and is now working in the banking industry. Fanning has logged over 2,000 miles over the last five months, averaging 20 miles per day while carrying a 45-pound backpack.
The public is invited to attend. While admission to the event is free, donations to The Pat Tillman Foundation will be accepted. For more information, log-on to www.walkforpat.org.
