Matthews Named To Chic-Fil-A Community of Champions

LUBBOCK, Texas - Redshirt sophomore Danielle Matthews was named to the 2008-2009 Winter Chic-Fil-A Community of Champions announced today by the Big 12 Conference. A student-athlete was chosen from each Big 12 member institution to represent their university as the honor is based on academics, community service, and sportsmanship.
Matthews has been an active leader in many community service projects, most recently helping to coordinate the student-athlete talent show which benefitted the Special Olympics and raised more than $1200. She also worked with former Lady Raider basketball coach Marsha Sharp and the United Future Leaders program during the past semester. UFL promotes values such as civility, ethics, and leadership for young students in local elementary schools. Matthews also achieved a 4.0 GPA during the fall 2008 semester and maintains status on the Dean's list.
Chic-Fil-A will award a $3,000 contribution to the Scholarship fund at Texas Tech based on Matthews efforts in her name.
Matthews a Bellevue, Wash., native has appeared in 15 games for the Red Raiders and was sidelined last year because of an injury.
