Merrell Two Shots Back in Hawaii

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Garrett Merrell (Dallas/Highland Park) carded his second 2-under 70 in as many round and vaulted to a second-place tie at the Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate on Thursday. Merrell, the nation's 19th-ranked collegiate golfer, trails Washington's Richard Lee for the lead by two strokes.
No. 16 Texas Tech is tied in fourth place with the nation's No. 5-ranked team, Stanford, and trail tournament leader No. 2 Southern California by 16 strokes. The Red Raiders are 9-over for the event. No. 11 Washington (573) and No. 48 Colorado (584) are second and third, respectively. The Huskies are the only other team in the event under par at 3-under. The Buffalos are one shot ahead of Tech and Stanford.
Oregon (586), No. 8 Arizona State (587), No. 20 TCU (588), No. 32 UC Davis (593) and No. 10 Georgia Tech (596) round out the top ten. No. 93 Oklahoma (597), No. 31 Florida State (604), Hawaii-Hilo (610), Kansas (623), No. 88 Fresno State (623), No. 99 San Francisco (628) and Hawaii (642) are currently 11th through 17th.
Nils Floren, playing as an individual, is 4-over after posting rounds of 73-75 and tied in 26th place. Following an opening-round 78, Will Griffin fired a 1-under 71 to move into a 31st-place tie, while Santiago Rivas is in 48th-place tie after matching his first-round 76 with another Thursday. Tyler Weworski is tied with Rivas following rounds of 75 and 77. Chris Ward struggled on the second day with an 84, after carding a 2-under 70 on Wednesday.
The third and final round gets underway at 11:30 a.m. CT on Friday.
