SAN DIEGO - Texas Tech softball dropped both games on its first day of competition in the San Diego Classic II, losing to New Mexico State, 9-1 (5), and Cal State Northridge, 3-2 (8). The Red Raiders will face Connecticut tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. CT on the campus of the University of San Diego.
New Mexico State started off the first game of the day by scoring seven runs in the first inning to put Tech in a hole it could not climb out of. Stephanie Drewry got the lone RBI of the game to score Ashley Hamada to make the score, 7-1. The Aggies added two more in the third, and due to the mercy rule in softball took the win after five innings, 9-1.
Game two against Cal State Northridge was a pitchers duel through four innings. The Matadors broke the deadlock scoring a run in the fifth, which was matched by Tech when Drewry walked and scored on a double by Jennifer Lee who extended her hitting streak to six games. Cal State Northridge pulled ahead again in the fifth to take a one run lead. Tech once again tied the game when Elizabeth Eimen singled and was brought home on a base hit by Emily Bledsoe. The game remained deadlocked and went into extra innings where the Matadors scored the game winning run on a single and a double to take the victory, 3-2. Ashly Jacobs pitched eight beautiful innings striking out seven in the loss.
On the day, Lee went 4-6 with one RBI including going 3-3 against Cal State Northridge.
Tech will be back in action tomorrow as it faces UCONN at 1:30 p.m. CT, on the campus of the University of San Diego. Fans can follow the action at www.texastech.com.
