LAS VEGAS - Texas Tech fell to 6-15 on the season with a morning loss to Notre Dame (4-5) as the Red Raiders only managed three hits in suffering the 7-0 loss in the first game of day two at the UNLV Invitational.
Alex Watkins got the start and fell behind, 3-0, when Notre Dame got a single, a walk, a two-run double and a run-scoring ground ball in the bottom of the first. Watkins, who fell to 0-5 on the season, settled down through the next three frames, but was touched up again in the fifth and sixth when the Irish added two more per frame. Ashly Jacobs came on in relief after Watkins issued a home run ball to Briana Jorgensborg and, after Jacobs gave up a pair of singles, she settled in to retire the final five outs.
But, the Red Raiders, whose team batting average was near .290 to begin the tournament, were cold again and only Leah Legler, Jennifer Lee and Watkins could manage hits off of Notre Dame starter, Brittney Barger who went the distance and picked up her fourth win of the season.
The two teams square off again tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. (PDT) in the concluding day of the four-team event hosted by UNLV. The Red Raiders hope to shake off the lethargic-look which plagued the team on Saturday and rebound before heading home to host No. 5 Oklahoma for a home-opening doubleheader in Lubbock on Tuesday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m.
