LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech enters the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational on Monday seeking defense of its title from a year ago. The Red Raiders played near flawless golf last season, taking a 20-stroke victory over the second place team at the event.
The event is a 54-hole format with 36 holes scheduled Monday and 18 Tuesday. Oak Hills Country Club (6,765 yards / par 71) is the host venue in San Antonio.
Senior Chris Ward returns to the tournament as the defending champion, after picking up his first collegiate win as a Red Raider last spring and firing an 11-under 202. Junior Nils Floren, currently the nation's No. 12-ranked golfer, finished second. Floren was 8-under in the event. Ward is ranked No. 50.
The duo is back this year with Floren playing at No. 1 and Ward in the second slot. Redshirt freshman Jacob Simon and sophomores Tyler Weworski and Brian Scherer will play at Nos. 3-5, respectively, while Finley Ewing IV will play individually.
The tournament gets underway at 8 a.m. Monday with the second round immediately following the conclusion of the first. Tuesday's third and final round will tee off at 8 a.m. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
The Red Raiders are coming off of a seventh-place finish at the Mauna Lani Invitational last week in Hawai'i. Tech finished ahead of three top 10 teams and another two ranked among the top 15 to jump from No. 19 to this week's ranked at No. 11.
