LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech claimed an impressive 3-2 victory over No. 4 Washington at the Callaway Match Play Championship on Monday in Marana, Ariz. The Red Raiders got wins from Chris Ward, Brian Scherer and Tyler Weworski to knock off the Huskies.
Ward was the final golfer of the group to finish and drained a birdie putt on the final hole to claim the win over Richard Lee and clinch the team win for Tech. Scherer won 2 up and Weworski 1 up.
"This was a solid win for us," Tech Head Coach Greg Sands said. "We played well against one of the top five teams in the country. We were steady throughout and I thought we came together and competed well."
The Red Raiders, 1-2 in the event, face No. 5 UCLA in the 11th-place match Tuesday at 8 a.m. local time. Tech dropped the opening match to San Diego, before knocking off Washington. Arizona handed Tech its second loss Monday afternoon.
