LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team officially began its 2011 season Thursday with the start of spring practices in preparation for its season opener less than a month away.
"We're excited to finally get going," head coach Shanon Hays said. "We have a good group back from last year and some new faces spread out, so I'm anxious to see what we can do. We obviously have about a month to go before the season starts, but it's always good to get everyone back and into a daily routine."
Even with cold conditions around the Lubbock area, the Red Raiders made the trek outside to practice at Rocky Johnson Field. The team should begin intersquad scrimmages early next week.
Tech returns 14 letterwinners, including All-Big 12 second team selections Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, from its 2010 team that advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Stanford Regional. Seven newcomers join the roster as well, led by junior college transfers Kelsey Dennis and Cydney Allen as well as freshman Kermitria Ward.
The Red Raiders begin the season at the Arizona State Kajikawa Tournament, Feb. 10-13. Tech will face BYU, Bradley, California, Indiana, and Appalachian State in the four-day event.
