LUBBOCK, Texas - Kim Kaufman led Texas Tech through the first round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic Sunday afternoon, firing a 4-under round that helped put the Lady Raiders in a tie for third at the Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman, Okla.
The opening-round card left Kaufman in a tie for first atop the individual leaderboard alongside Ket Preamchuen from Kennesaw State. The senior began the day with birdies on her opening three holes en route to six on the day and a 68 card, which was her lowest round of the season.
The Lady Raiders, who were ranked 29th in the latest Golfweek poll, totaled low rounds throughout their lineup as Elin Arvidsson posted a 1-over 73 and Gabby Dominguez and Beverly Mendoza both finished with 2-over cards.
Arvidsson's round left her just inside the top 20 in a tie for 17th, while Dominguez and Mendoza are both tied for 22nd overall. Deborah DeVilla fired a 7-over round to complete Tech's round.
Tech trails first-place Florida State by five strokes heading into Monday second round as the Seminoles opened with a 4-under 284 thanks to three players with 2-under cards individually.
Texas A&M sits a stroke ahead of Tech and New Mexico in second place at even-par. The Lady Raiders have a four-stroke gap in between fifth-place Oklahoma after their 1-over 289 card.
DeVilla will be the first Tech player on the course Monday morning as she tees off at 9:40 a.m. The three-day tournament concludes with Tuesday's final round.
