LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team dropped to fourth overall Monday after the second round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic that is being held at the Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman, Okla.
After firing a 1-over 289 on Sunday, the Lady Raiders finished a few strokes higher with a 5-over second round that moved Tech four strokes back of Florida State and Oklahoma, who are tied for second at 2-over.
"It was an up-and-down day, but our team hung in there nicely," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "Each one of our players knows they can do better tomorrow, so we are in a good spot. We're looking forward to the challenge."
For the second-straight day, Kim Kaufman led the Tech lineup as the junior fired an even-par 72 to stay in the hunt for the individual title after entering the day with a share of the tournament lead.
She enters Tuesdays' final round in a tie for second at 4-under, just a stroke back of Oklahoma's Anne Tanguay, who fired a tournament-best 5-under second round to oust Kaufman from atop the leaderboard.
Gabby Dominguez and Beverly Mendoza also continued their consistent play with another 2-over round that left the duo 4-over for the tournament and in a tie for 22nd overall.
Deborah DeVilla overcame a difficult first round to record a 1-over card that moved her 8-over for the tournament and in a tie for 40th overall. Elin Arvidsson, meanwhile, struggled to continue her strong first round as she finished 10-over on the day to move to 11-over for the tournament.
Texas A&M overtook the tournament lead from Florida State after a 5-under 283 round, leaving the Aggies as the only squad under par after shooting even during the opening round.
Mendoza will be the first Lady Raider on the course Tuesday morning as she tees off from the seventh hole at 9 a.m. Temperatures are expected to be around 40 degrees when action resumes tomorrow morning in Norman.
