LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team had four players in the top 20 Monday as the Lady Raiders took an 11 stroke lead after the opening two rounds of the Baylor Invitational.
Playing at the Twin Rivers Golf Club in Waco, Tech will enter Tuesday's final round seeking its first tournament title of the season as the Lady Raiders finished 28-over on the day, 11 strokes better than second-place UTSA.
Despite the lead at the end of the day, Tech spent most of the morning looking up the leaderboard as its 21-over 309 opening round put the Lady Raiders in a tie for fourth overall heading into the afternoon session. Midway through the second round, though, Tech could only see its name atop the standings.
Backed by a 2-under 70 from Alex Gibson, the Lady Raiders shot a course-best 7-over 295 in the second round to move past opening round leader Baylor and the rest of the 18-team field.
"Our team hung in there all day through some tough winds, and we got contributions throughout the lineup," head coach JoJo Robertson said. "We played an absolute amazing second round and I was proud to see how the team responded in the tough conditions. Hopefully we can put together another solid round tomorrow and give ourselves a chance."
Gibson finished the day in a tie for second at 4-over-par as she was able to erase a few strokes from her 6-over 78 opening round. Tech's lone senior on the roster, Gibson recorded seven birdies during the second round, including three during her first four holes.
Gabby Dominguez trails three strokes back of Gibson in a tie for ninth after 2-over 74 and 5-over 77 rounds. Joining her in the top 20 was Kim Kaufman, who fired consecutive 4-over 76 rounds to sit in a tie for 12th, and Deborah DeVilla, who overcame a 9-over 81 to shoot even par over the final 18 holes to finish in a tie for 14th overall.
Playing on her home course, Baylor's Chelsey Cothran leads Gibson and UTSA's Taylor Newlin by one stroke after finishing with 1-over and 2-over rounds.
The Lady Raiders tee off the final round at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Fans can keep up with the action at www.golfstat.com.
