LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech maintained a double-digit stroke lead throughout the final round of the Baylor Invitational Tuesday en route to claiming its first tournament title of the season as the Lady Raiders held off the remainder of the field with a 7-over 295 card.
In the process, Alex Gibson rallied from a few strokes down late to take the individual crown after 1-under 71 round that left her 3-over for the tournament. The lone senior on Tech's roster, Gibson recorded two birdies during the round with her lone bogey coming on the par-3 17th hole, earning her second career individual title.
"I'm happy for the team and proud of the way they competed this week," head coach JoJo Robertson said. "They didn't let up today and to see Alex shoot one-under in the final round and win was absolutely awesome. This team is tough and has worked hard for this win."
Tech's 7-over performance Tuesday matched its second round card from Monday that shot the Lady Raiders up the leaderboard. North Texas was Tech's closest competition as the Mean Green fired a 1-over final round to finish 45-over for the tournament, 10 strokes off the lead.
Gabby Dominguez wrapped the day with an even-par 72 to post her third-consecutive top five finish as the sophomore was 7-over for the tournament in fifth place. Kim Kaufman trailed close behind in a tie for ninth at 10-over as she shot also saved her best round of the week for Tuesday, firing a 2-over 74 card.
Deborah DeVilla completed Tech's card with a 6-over round as she finished just outside the top 20 in a tie for 23rd at 15-over-par. Tech's lone remaining player, Hannah Arnold, also recorded a 6-over final card to finish 28-over for the tournament.
Gibson outlasted final round runs from Jacey Chun of North Texas and Kelsey Welber of Missouri State who both fired under-par rounds to sit in a three-way tie for second at 4-over. First day leader Chelsey Cothran of Baylor also finished 4-over after a 1-over 73 final card.
The tournament win was Tech's first since taking the Heather Farr Memorial Classic title in October 2010, Robertson's second event as head coach. Gibson won individual title at the event as well.
The Lady Raiders will hope to take their solid play on the links into next week's Big 12 Championships. The three-day event begins April 22 at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo.
