Four Red Raiders Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Big 12 Conference has named 18 student-athletes to the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Men's Tennis team, the league office announce on Tuesday afternoon. Texas Tech juniors Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia and sophomores Vitor Manzini and Raphael Pfister all received first team honors.
Carvalho (Brazilia, Brazil) holds a 3.22 grade-point average in human science and Garcia (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) has a 3.43 GPA in business. Manzini (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) and Pfister (Sao Paulo, Brazil) are also business majors with a 3.50 and 3.74 GPA, respectively.
This is the second honor for Carvalho and the first for Garcia, Manzini and Pfister.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, the tennis academic all-league squad consists of 13 first team and five second team selections. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA and the second team are those who have a 3.00-3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
