LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech women's golfer Kim Kaufman ended her run at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship Wednesday afternoon as the junior-to-be fell to Brittany Mai in the opening round of match play at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.
Kaufman controlled the lead for most of the day before recording a bogey and double-bogey on the 14th and 15th holes to swing momentum to Mai. The two players were forced into sudden death due to a bogey on the 18th from Mai, who quickly rebounded a hole later with a birdie to close the match.
The back nine was a complete opposite than the front nine for Kaufman as she was able to go 2-up thanks to birdies on the fifth, sixth, and eighth holes, erasing an early one-hole deficit in the process.
Kaufman finished the match with a 5-over 76 card, which equaled her opening round score Monday during stroke play. The Clark, S.D. native qualified for the match play portion of the tournament after combining to shoot 10-over during two rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday.
Mai will advance to a Thursday morning match against Annie Park, who defeated No. 9-seed Rachel Morris earlier in the day.
