The contest was the sixth all-time between the two schools as Tech evened the series with the win. The Red Raiders were previously 0-3 when facing Stephen F. Austin at a neutral site. Tech extended its winning streak to 10-straight, its longest such streak since winning 11 in a row to close the non-conference portion of the schedule last year.
The win moved Tech to the championship game of the Texas Shootout where the Red Raiders will face Texas State Sunday afternoon.
The game marked the second-straight day Tech has gone into extra-innings. The Red Raiders defeated North Texas, 10-0, on Friday. Tech is 6-2 in extra inning games under head coach Shanon Hays.
Tech had not previously played in extra inning games on consecutive days since defeating Georgia Southern, 2-1, in nine innings then Utah, 6-2, in eight innings on March 10-11, 2001.
The Tech pitching staff gave up just its third run of the tournament when SFA put one across with two outs in the seventh. Tech has held each of its last four opponents to two runs or less.
For the third time this weekend, Tech struggled to score early as the Red Raiders have been shut out until at least the five innings in three of four games. The lone exception was its earlier game in the day against UTEP.
Kermitria Ward's fifth-inning RBI infield single marked only her fourth RBI of her career and first of the season. Ward also scored the game-winning run in the eighth.
Adriana Perez went 2-for-3 at the plate for her team-leading fifth multiple-hit game of the season. All five of those multiple-hit games have come in Tech's last seven contests.
Brittany Talley came on in relief for the first time since facing Cal Poly on Feb. 11. Her 6.0 innings pitched marked her longest relief appearance of the season.
Talley had previously gone 17.0-straight innings without allowing a run until Linda Lanares singled home a run with two outs in the seventh inning.
Stephen F. Austin starter Kaitlyn Mixon was just the second left-hander Tech had faced this season. The Red Raiders are 2-0 this year against lefties.
