LUBBOCK, Texas - Big 12 Conference play opens on Thursday, as two of the top teams in the league square off in women's tennis at the McLeod Tennis Center at 3 p.m., when No. 12 Baylor (11-3) squares off No. 20 Texas Tech (8-2).
"Baylor, year-in and year out, is a quality team deserving of its ranking," said Lady Raider head coach Todd Petty. "If we stay in the match as a team, we have the ability to be successful."
Baylor is 7-3 against ranked teams and enters the match after falling to No. 3 UCLA, 4-0, last week. Baylor's top three players are all ranked nationally - Diana Nakic (No. 9), Nina Secerbegovic (No. 32) and Sona Novakova (No. 47). The doubles tandem of Nina Secerbegovic and Megan Horter are ranked 46th.
Texas Tech opens Big 12 play after going 2-1 in Las Vegas. Elizabeth Ullathorne is ranked No. 123 nationally, while the Lady Raider duo of Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo are No. 47 in doubles.
Earlier this week, Texas Tech received its highest ITA national ranking ever, moving up 12 spots from No. 32 to No. 20.
"I think it is good for our players to see what their hard work can produce, but we cannot stop there," added Petty. "We have to continue to play hard if we are going to reach all of the goals that we set out earlier this season."
Admission is free to all Texas Tech tennis matches.
