LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech golfers Gabby Dominguez and Kim Kaufman put themselves in position to advance to the match play portion of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championships Monday after two solid opening rounds at the Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station, N.J.
Kaufman opened the 36-hole stroke play format with an even-par 72 that left her tied for 26th overall and just four strokes off the lead entering Tuesday's second round. The Clark, S.D. native finished with 16 pars during the round as she bogeyed the par-3 third before rallying to birdie the par-5 fourth moments later.
The top 64 players from the two rounds of stroke play will advance to match play which begins Wednesday morning and runs all the way until Saturday. Kaufman moved to the match play format a year ago before being eliminated in the opening round.
Dominguez, meanwhile, overcame three bogeys over the back nine with a birdie on her final hole, the par-5 ninth, in order to finish just inside the cut line in a tie for 55th at 2-over.
The Chilton, Texas native, whose caddie this week is Texas Tech head coach JoJo Robertson, will need a solid second round to advance as 71 players finished the first 18 holes between 1- and 5-over-par.
After being in the afternoon wave on Monday, Kaufman will open the second round at 7:20 a.m. CT Tuesday morning from the 10th hole while Dominguez will wait to begin until 12 p.m. from the first tee.
