LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech golfers Gabby Dominguez and Kim Kaufman wrapped the second round of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in a tie for 20th Tuesday to advance to the match play portion of the tournament.
The two juniors finished among the top 64 in the 156-player field to move on to match play which begins Wednesday morning and runs until Saturday at the Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station, N.J.
For Kaufman, advancing was never in doubt as she was 1-under through the opening nine holes before finishing with an even-par 72 round for the second-straight day.
The Clark, S.D. native will be looking to avenge a first-round loss in match play last year when she tees off against Alice Chen at 10:27 a.m. CT Wednesday. Chen, who hails from nearby Princeton, N.J., finished tied for 37th during stroke play with a 2-over card.
Dominguez, meanwhile, went from right at the cut line following the front nine to easily advance as she fired a 2-under card that was highlighted by back-to-back birdies to close the round on the par-3 17th and the par-5 18th. The Chilton, Texas product recorded four total birdies and a bogey over the back nine.
She will face T.J. Kliebphipat (Panorama City, Calif.) at 11:30 a.m. in the final match to tee off during the morning round. Kliebphipat tied for 43rd and just two strokes up on the cut line with a 3-over card.
Dominguez is making her first career appearance at the tournament after qualifying in an Arlington sectional earlier this month. Her caddie this week is Texas Tech head coach JoJo Robertson.
